Corsicana Group has eye for the future

Friday, February 27th, 2009

By Bob BelcherThe future growth and appearance of Corsicana may very well be influenced by a group that works “outside the box” of government influence.

The phrase “outside the box” accurately describes the body known as the Strategic Planning Group, or SPG. They have taken on a large task — helping craft a better, cleaner, easier to market Corsicana and Navarro County.

And the work toward meeting that goal — admittedly a long-term one — is already underway.

The Strategic Planning Group is comprised of active and retired business people, community leaders and volunteers that are looking at various aspects of the city. Infrastructure, thoroughfares, community identity and “branding” are but a few of the aspects the group is analyzing. The desired result — a workable plan for progress that includes a “buy-in” from every segment of the community.

Corsicana Residents Witness Fire Falling from Sky

Monday, February 16th, 2009

by Shannon Cotton

Texans Report “fireballs” and “explosions” Sunday Shortly before noon on Sunday, February 15, Central Texas law enforcement officials began receiving calls from startled residents concerned about a possible plane crash or explosion. Local residents reported seeing burning objects falling from the sky, and many reported hearing a loud “explosion” and feeling their homes shake.

Shortly after 12 p.m. Sunday, Waco news station KWTX alerted residents that law enforcement officials were looking for the source of a “loud explosion” heard and felt by residents throughout Central Texas. A short time later, it was reported that an FAA spokesman said the agency suspected that residents were seeing and feeling the effects of falling debris from the U.S. and Russian satellites that collided in space last week.

Bonner planning banner year

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

By Bob Belcher

Aric Bonner’s voice was confident and optimistic Thursday as he spoke of his plans for the year as new president of the Corsicana/Navarro County Chamber of Commerce.

Bonner gathered chamber board members for a workshop to form committees and outline the goals and objectives he wants the chamber to strive for in 2009, including a new event designed to reach across cultural lines in the community.

“The objective for me is to make sure the chamber is encompassing the entire community,” Bonner said. “I don’t think we’ve done a very successful job in the past of including all segments of the community.”

His goal of reaching out to all is consistent with the theme Bonner has set for the year — Breaking New Ground.

City enacts voluntary water restrictions

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

By Bob Belcher

The City of Corsicana has issued a public notice enacting voluntary water restrictions for all of its residential and commercial customers.

Officially, the city is under “mild drought conditions,” and voluntary measures are encouraged to help ease the demand on the city’s water sources.

During the “voluntary” restriction period, consumers are asked to limit the amount of water they consume in their homes and businesses.

In addition to the voluntary measures, the city also asks consumers to limit lawn watering to a rotating five-day schedule based on the last digit of their street address. Any watering should be limited to between the hours of 8 p.m. and 10 a.m., with no landscape watering between the hours of 10 a.m. and 8 p.m.
